Rare Autograph Letter from Rabbi Nachum Mordechai of Chortkov; 1938

Chortkov: “Although it is not my practice to give handwritten letters, nonetheless, I have diverted from my custom and come in writing in order to uphold this holy place whose pinnacle reaches the Heavens…”

Handwritten and signed letter from Rabbi Nachum Mordechai of Chortkov, regarding the maintenance of the Ruziner Kloiz.

The Kloiz was the most majestic and opulent shul in all of Chortkov. Construction of the Kloiz was completed in 1893 by Rabbi David Moshe, the son of Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin. His son, Rabbi Yisrael of Chortkov, directed the planning and arrangements.

In his will, Rabbi Yisrael of Chortkov requested to maintain the building and ensure that it remained standing for many years.

With the outbreak of the First World War, Rabbi Nachum Mordechai fled to Vienna, during which time the courtyard sustained damage. The building, however, remained almost untouched.

In this rare letter, Rabbi Nachum Mordechai calls upon his followers to join the holy work of repairing the Kloiz.

Dated Chortkov, 1938.
