Fascinating Halachic Response from Rabbi Meir Arik Regarding Permissibility of Housing a Sefer Torah in an American Prison

Response from Rabbi Meir Arik of Tarnow, regarding whether or not it is permitted to bring a sefer Torah into an American non-Jewish prison, for the Jewish inmates being held there.
This Halachic question was asked by Rabbi Zev Wolf Leiter, Av Beis Din of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The letter’s header and signature are handwritten by Rabbi Meir, and is dated Tarn, 1924.

Rabbi Meir Arik (1855 – 1926) was a rabbinic luminary admired by all of the Torah leaders of his time. He succeeded the Maharsham as the Halachic authority, becoming one of the prominent authorities in all of Galicia. He was rabbinically ordained by the Maharsham and the Kochav MiYaakov and led thousands of disciples. During the First World War he fled Buchach to Vienna. He passed away in his sukkah after reciting Kiddush. He authored many responsa.
