Manuscript: Handwritten Torah Novellae by the "Shevet Mussar, " Rabbi Eliyahu HaCohen of Izmir

Autograph manuscript containing Torah novellae handwritten by Rabbi Eliyahu HaCohen Ha’Itamri of Izmir, author of Shevet Mussar and Midrash Talpiyos.

These novellae were published in Megaleh Tzfunos, Part One in Izmir, 1857, based on this very manuscript.

On page 7b there is a remnant of a sketch depicting Yaakov and Eisav’s simultaneous entrance and exit at the time of their blessings. The center of the sketch is missing and it was entirely omitted in the published sefer.

Rabbi Eliyahu HaCohen Ha’Itamri of Izmir was a great Kabbalist and miracle worker and one of the leading rabbis of Izmir. He was known to possess holy powers, and as he himself recounts in his sefarim he banished the evil spirits several times. He was admired by both Sephardic and Ashkenazic rabbis alike and his very name demanded reverence. He authored over thirty treatises. His most renowned work is sefer Shevet Mussar, and his sefer Midrash Talpiyos gained wide acclaim as well. The Shevet Mussar passed away at an old age in 1729 and is buried in Izmir.
