Exchange of Letters between the Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Avraham Chaim Gagin and Rabbi Shmuel Salant; Jerusalem, circa 1845

Exchange of letters between Rabbi Shmuel Salant and Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Avraham Chaim Gagin regarding the laws of ribbis.

During his early days in Jerusalem, Rabbi Shmuel Salant sent a letter to the Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Avraham Chaim Gagin with a halachic question regarding ribbis (an interest-yielding loan).
Rabbi Salant’s letter was written by a scribe in Rashi script and signed by Rabbi Salant in square lettering: "Shmuel bhr”v z”l."
This signature from Rabbi Salant is rare.

The second page contains Rabbi Avraham Chaim Gagin’s response which he himself signed, followed by Rabbi Salant’s response to this, copied over by a scribe.

Rabbi Avraham Chaim Gagin (1787-1848) was the son-in-law of Rabbi Refael Avraham Shalom Mizrachi, author of Divrei Shalom, and a grandson of Rabbi Shalom Sharabi. He served as the Rishon l’Tzion. He authored Responsa Chukei Chaim and Mincha Tehorah.

Rabbi Shmuel Salant (1816-1909) served as the rabbi of Jerusalem for seventy years, and stood at the helm of its charity funds.
