Letter from Rabbi Eliezer Gordon, Rosh Yeshiva of Telz; 1909

After a raging fire consumed many homes throughout Telz, including the newly built Telz Yeshiva building, Rabbi Eliezer Gordon was determined to rebuild. In this letter, Rabbi Eliezer requests that the yeshiva’s fundraiser, Rabbi Shabsi Rubel, be greeted kindly, and writes: “The expenses of building the yeshiva cost us a lot more than we expected… and completing the building must be done as soon as possible because of bitul Torah.”

Rabbi Eliezer Gordon (1841-1910) was a leading Lithuanian rabbi and rosh yeshiva. He was a disciple of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter and was renowned for his incredible genius. He possessed a deep, analytical mind and a refined character, both of which he imparted to his students in his renowned Torah lectures. He served as the ab”d of Telz and was responsible for bringing the yeshiva to its peak. In 1910, he traveled on a fundraising trip to England where he took ill and passed away. His responsa are published in Teshuvos Rabbi Eliezer.
