“PRAISE G-D NOBODY WAS HARMED… AND IT WAS A GREAT MIRACLE THAT THERE WAS RELIEF”

Autograph Letter from Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher of Greiditz Regarding Amulets Used for Protection During a Plague

Handwritten and signed letter from Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher of Greiditz addressed to Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Bamberger, ab”d of Kissingen and son of the Rabbi of Würzburg.

In this letter, Rabbi Guttmacher discusses an amulet which served as a tremendous protection during a cholera epidemic. He writes how rumors of this segula amulet spread widely, and how, in light of the great demand for these amulets, the scribes could not keep up with the pace of orders and therefore printed thousands of copies.
Rabbi Guttmacher then continues to describe how “Praise G-d… no one was harmed, and those who were [already] harmed were healed… It was a great wonder that salvation came about to those who were already affected as well.”

Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher (1796-1874) was known by all as the "Tzaddik of Greiditz" and was one of the first and primary disciples of Rabbi Akiva Eiger in Poznań. Following his marriage, he continued learning by Rabbi Akiva Eiger and remained in close contact with him after moving on to accept a rabbinical position. His reputation won wide acclaim and people flocked to him from far and wide.

Dated Greiditz, 1872.
