Decorated Manuscript: “Moreh Nevuchim – Guide for the Perplexed” by Maimonides, in its Original Arabaic; Yemen, 19th Century

Two handwritten volumes of sefer Moreh Nevuchim (Guide for the Perplexed), authored by Maimonides, in its original Arabic form.

The manuscripts are handwritten in neat Yemenite script with many colorfully decorated titles (mostly in Part One).

Moreh Nevuchim was first authored by Maimonides in Arabic, the spoken language of the Jews of Egypt, North Africa and Yemen at the time. Already during the Rambam’s lifetime, this sefer was translated and copied many times over.

It is well-known that Yemenite manuscripts of the Rambam’s sefarim are the most reliable. The Yemenite Jews accepted the Rambam as their leader and therefore meticulously copied over his words.  During the Rambam’s lifetime, they sent scholarly scribes to compare their manuscripts to the Rambam’s original texts.
