Renowned by the name of his sefer Matzas Shimurim, the holy Jerusalem kabbalist Rabbi Nosson Shapira journeyed in 1665 to Italy to raise funds for the indigent Jewish community in Jerusalem. While on this vital mission, he published his celebrated work Matzas Shimurim which was enthusiastically received by Torah luminaries and kabbalists. He ultimately settled in Reggio, Italy, where he passed away in 1666.
