Manuscript: Historic Ledger Belonging to ‘Chevras Naveh Shalom’, Italy 1750 – 1839

Handwritten ledger used by the ‘Naveh Shalom’ committee of Alisandra della Apulia, Italy, over the course of nearly ninety years.

This fascinating historic notebook grants us a unique glimpse into the lives and lifestyle of Italian Jewry in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Included in the ledger is a long introduction, a detailed schedule of learning for every day of the year, a list of committee members, dedications, and a poem praising the committee.
Based on the introduction, it seems that the Naveh Shalom committee was established in 1748, while the date marked on the title page reads 1750.
Also included in the notebook is a list of rabbis beginning with Rabbi Matisyahu Levi, Rabbi of Alisandra della Apulia. Several other names listed are known from other sources regarding this town.
