Rabbi Gedalya of Linitz (1738 – 1804) was one of the illustrious patriarchs of the Chassidic movement. In his youth, he was acquainted with the holy Baal Shem Tov and studied as well by the Maggid of Mezritch. His main rabbis, however, were Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Polonne, author of the Toldos, and Rabbi Leib of Polonne, whom he mentions numerous  times in his writings, calling him the "Rav Hamochiach."
