“HATZLACHA, PARNASSAH AND NACHAS”

Letter from the Holy Rabbi Shalom Eliezer Halberstam of Ratzfert, 1938

Letter of blessing and appreciation from the holy Rabbi Sholom Eliezer Halberstam of Ratzfert, dated 1938.

Rabbi Sholom Eliezer (1862 – 1944) was the son of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz and was a renowned miracle worker whose blessings were known to bear fruit. Numerous stories were recounted among Hungarian Jewry of the miracles he brought about, as well as of his care and concern for each and every individual.

Sometime around the year 1900, he moved from Galicia to Hungary where he became leader of the many Sanz Chassidim. His exemplary holiness and his deep concern for others attracted thousands of Chassidim to his courtyard.

Prior to his deportation to Auschwitz, he recounted that his holy father had appeared to him in a dream, offering him a choice between death
al Kiddush Hashem and being saved. Rabbi Sholom Eliezer heroically chose death
al kiddush Hashem and arrived in Auschwitz clad in Tefillin and
tachrichim beneath his clothing.
