The Holy Shinover: Interesting Letter of Recommendation from Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga Halberstam, 1888

Letter of recommendation from the illustrious Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga of Shinowa, renowned author of the Divrei Yechezkel.

The letter regards a Tzfas resident and a recipient of its Kollel stipend in desperate need of financial assistance.

Written on personal stationary in Shinowa, 1888,
the last four lines of the letter are handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga himself: "
And try by all relatives of the philanthropists that they should assist him with a holy double allotment, so that he should be able to return to live in the Holy Land. And in the merit of the charity may we merit our redemption and the redemption of our souls speedily in our day, The humble Yechezkel Shraga Halberstam."

Upon close inspection of his signature, you can see how Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga obscured the lamed of "Yechezkel" with the shin of "Shraga" so as not to spell out the name of G-d at the end of the name "Yechezkel."

Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga Halberstam (1813 – 1898) was the eldest son of the Admor Rabbi Chaim of Sanz. He was an illustrious and world-renowned leader, respected by all of the rabbis and Kabbalists of his time.
