Contract between the Karlsburg community and a
shochet and
chazzan, handwritten by Rabbi Yechezkel Paneth, and signed by him and other community leaders.
The first half of the page, dated the 5th of Kislev, 1833, details a contract valid for half a year, and there is a half-year extension on the second half.

Rabbi Yechezkel Paneth (1783 – 1845) was the Av Beis Din of Karlsburg and Transylvania and patriarch of the Deyzh dynasty. He was a disciple of the Baruch Ta’am. He later joined the Chassidic movement whereupon he became a close disciple of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Rimanov. His teachings were published in the
sefer Menachem Tzion ( lot 72). In 1822, he was appointed chief rabbi of Karlsburg and Transylvania during which time he traveled from city to city, spreading Torah and religion. He authored Responsa Mareh Yechezkel.
